Space & Flow Yoga

A candid shot from my mat during one of my yoga teacher trainings at the Asheville Yoga Center.

I love how yoga can move me out of a “stuck place.”

Feeling stuck is one of the worst feelings for me, so when I lead someone through yoga practices, I like to draw our awareness to the qualities of yoga that I benefit from the most, moving stagnation.

Space and Flow.

Space is the much overlooked sixth sense and fifth element. It’s the sense of relief we get from going on a drive or taking in a view of the ocean or a mountain vista. All things arise from space and space is also present within us through a sense of constriction or expansion that accompanies us in states of either stress or relaxation. Yoga puts us in touch with this element of space which in the yogic path, is represented by the God Shiva.

Flow is the movement of energy that alleviates my dreaded state of feeling stuck. Stagnation is not natural for the body, which is wired for movement. Blood and lympth fluids as well as energy and awareness need to move through the body to circulate wellness throughout. Greater flow is enabled with greater spaciousness. Yoga practices can help us increase our awareness are capacity to work with these elements more consciously in our bodies and our lives. In the yogic path, the element of flow is represented by the Goddess Shakti who is partnered with Shiva as eternal lovers, two parts of the whole.

I’ve chosen to brand my yoga teacher practice Space & Flow to always remind me of my mission to help stuck people find more ease through capacity building practices for increased space and flow.
